I decided to add my experience to the list of tips I've seen online. We made this choice after extensive research and completed the K2 base camp trip with a local tour company. I chose Apricot Tours after researching a number of Pakistani tour companies, which was a wise choice! They had excellent prices, guidance, safety, and food. But I would want to provide some advice to anyone thinking about climbing the peak.
Tips for K2 Base Camp Trek
While in Skardu, try to take a trip that lasts as long as possible to a high altitude; this will help you acclimatise and prepare your body to handle the altitude.
Make sure you have appropriate travel insurance that covers 5000 metres above sea level and helicopter rescue because one of the women from another company fell that way.
Before you travel, walk as much as you can to stay in shape. I suffered because I didn't realise how difficult the endeavour would be. The person with whom I camped had been attending frequent training weekends, and it was obvious.
Bring along extra supplies like protein snacks and energy pills. When your thighs feel like they've been hit with a sledgehammer following a workout, they will taste like manna from heaven.
Make sure you bring additional cash, either in dollars or pounds. Although it is supposed to be optional, tipping the porters is actually required.
As a precaution, I would highly advise buying altitude sickness medication!
It would be great if you could bring some spare clothing or shoes to offer to the porters who carry your belongings. Some of these men have almost nothing on their feet and wear extremely simple attire, and they make very little money. Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any special inquiries about this trek, the route, etc.
Do thorough research on the organisations offering the vacation. I used Apricot Tours to do it, and I heartily endorse them.
I hope the information above was helpful. It's a wonderful, fulfilling adventure that you won't soon forget.
