On April 28, 2023, Scandinavian Airlines opened a brand-new route connecting Newark Liberty International Airport with Aalborg Airport, allowing Americans to visit Northern Denmark, a less-traveled region of Europe.
This new route will depart three times per week from Newark during the summers of 2023 and 2024 using an A321 Long Range aircraft, which has a carbon emissions reduction of 15–18% and feels more like a regular airliner than a big, congested long-distance aircraft.
On this flight, three classes are available: SAS Go, SAS Pro, and SAS Business. With Fast Track and Priority boarding, lie-flat beds with plugs, reading lights, and a 15.4-inch HD entertainment screen, SAS Business Class is very comfortable. Three-course dinners, free Wi-Fi, and Scandinavian toiletries are all nice extras that enhance the overall experience. Go with SAS Pro instead of SAS Business if you want more luxury but can't afford the higher price, as it includes wider reclining chairs with footrests and two-course meals.
The SAS trip to Aalborg, the fourth-largest city in Denmark, takes off late at night and lands in the middle of the day. The northern region of Denmark, or North Jutland, has a lot to offer tourists interested in outdoor activities, fantastic dining, and cultural encounters in an unknown location.
Aalborg
After arriving in Aalborg, make a reservation at the recently upgraded Hotel Pier 5. It has a front-row seat to the Limfjord, a popular summer swimming area that runs through the city. You may reach Old Town, a lovely neighborhood with old half-timbered homes, cathedrals, and narrow lanes lined with stores, in about ten minutes on foot.
The Musikkens Hus and the KUNSTEN - Museum of Modern Art are just two examples of the many creative organizations in this easily walkable city that have stunning architecture. The KUNSTEN, created by the renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, houses the creations of some amazing artists from Denmark and all over the world. Don't forget to see a performance in the outdoor amphitheater and explore the outdoor sculpture garden.
Other noteworthy locations in Aalborg include the Park of Music, which is full of trees that musicians have planted and where you can play one of their tunes, and the Utzon Centre, which features breathtaking Danish architectural and design exhibits. Our favorite restaurant is Restaurant Emil, whose chef uses fish in unique ways that are both tasty and aesthetically pleasing.
One of the world's most distinctive sights, Regan Vest, is located thirty minutes to the south. Regan Vest, a Cold War bunker constructed for the Danish royal family and administration, became a museum in February 2023. It is the only Cold War bunker in the entire globe that still contains its original furnishings and components. You can visit this subterranean bunker and discover what life was like there if the Danish government had to use it in the Cold War. Each quarter, tickets go on sale, but demand is high. Regan Vest tickets are available through travel brokers that you would not otherwise have access to.
Thy
Thy is a lovely adventure and cultural destination located on the Danish northwest coast. Due to the region's world-class surfing areas in little fishing communities situated at the same latitude as Juneau, Alaska, it is known as "Cold Hawaii." Take a lesson at one of the several Thy surf businesses, like Surfshop Vorupor, to learn how to control the waves.
Visit National Park Thy, Denmark's first national park, to go hiking, mountain biking, swimming, or mushroom hunting. It offers a lovely hilly coastline terrain. Kayaking, snorkeling, and an ATV beach safari are all available at OutNature in Lokken. The tour includes a beach bonfire, a quick drive past abandoned World War II bunkers, and a visit to an aging cemetery that is collapsing towards the water.
Although Thy is known for outdoor recreation, it also offers a variety of cultural events. Visit Thy Whisky for a whisky tasting, ascend a lighthouse in Hanstholm, browse for stunning jewelry from Danish jewelry designer Jan Jorgensen, and check out the Museum for Paper Art for some of the most unique paper sculptures you've ever seen. Don't forget to visit Restaurant VANDret for an upgraded dining experience in a lovely setting and Kesses Hus to sample Danish pancakes. Make a reservation at Restaurant TRI, which serves 13–17 dishes of seafood and produce from the region.
Families should book a night at Hotel Hanstholm Madbar for its apartment-style accommodations with kitchenettes when seeing the Northwest Coast. If not, consider the recently opened Vorupor Badehotel, a chic boutique hotel with a fantastic bar and restaurant, or Strandhotellet Blokhus, a historic hotel with a terrific restaurant serving gourmet food and being just steps from the beach.

The island of Laeso, which is off the northeast coast of Denmark, is well-known for its salt manufacturing at Laeso Saltsyderi (a salt-making museum you may visit), as well as for its fishing industry, seaweed cottages, and salt houses. Laeso is a fantastic day trip destination accessible by ferry, but if you intend to overnight on the island, we advise renting one of the well-known seaweed houses, like Tanggaarden Skoven. Eelgrass, which is not actually seaweed, was historically used to construct roofs solely in Laeso. At Museumsgarden, you may discover how the Laeso women perfected the "seaweed houses."
Laeso Tang offers seaweed foraging tours, or you can visit their store to buy beer, honey, crackers with seaweed in them, facial items, and more! After that, visit the exhibition of renowned pipe maker and artist Anne Julie, and finish your day with a trip on Ronnerbussen's tractor and wagon through the salt flats. Stop for a delicious meal of Laeso lobster at VestersVenner or a delicious lunch of fresh seafood at Huset Palsgaard to fill your stomach.
Skagen
Skagen is a popular Danish summer destination with most houses and buildings painted in a particular color of yellow. Expect lots of people flocking to the beach and staying at the city’s most famous hotels, Ruth's Hotel and Brondums Hotel. Ruth's Hotel has a delicious brassiere and Oke, a gourmet restaurant, while the historic Brondums Hotel is a perfect spot to try Danish cuisine like open-faced sandwiches (or smorrebrod).
Due to its location on Denmark's northernmost tip, Skagen enjoys year-round sunshine, breathtaking sunsets, and a unique natural phenomenon where two oceans (the Baltic and the North) converge. At the Grenen Peninsula, observe the convergence of the two oceans' waves.
Before cycling to Peter Ravn's Gallery Munk on the harbor for a painting experience with Skagen's most pleasant artist, visit Skagen Museum to learn about the famous painters of Skagen. You must visit the sand-buried church before leaving Skagen; it is a stunning white chapel whose ground floor is entirely covered by a sand dune.
Contact the amazing Claus Bruun if you need a tour of Skagen; he'll show you all the great places and give you a local's perspective on this ancient settlement.
